CONNECTING LOCAL GROWERS TO LOCAL MARKETS
Kahumana Farm Hub aggregates and distributes produce from backyard growers and small farmers on Oahu's Leeward coast.
Historically, Waianae was the food basket of Oahu. Today, Kahumana Farm Hub helps to share Waianae's native abundance at farmers' markets, restaurants and grocery stores across the island, while creating income opportunities, preventing food waste and cultivating relationships with food producers in the community.

"…it’s a resource that is helping me cause I could go pick my ‘ulu filled tree and make eighty dollars. That’s something that was unheard of for a very long time in Wai‘anae because we did not have a hub."

HISTORY
Saleh Azizi was hired in 2017 to manage the Kahumana Farm Hub through the USDA Specialty Crop Block Grant, managed by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture. The first members were acquired through weeks of knocking on doors where fruit trees flourished in the backyard. When people heard the hub could facilitate food security through its many customers it spread by word of mouth to serve 80 'ohana growers in the community.
Since that humble beginning, Saleh has now become the head of the Statewide Hawaii Farm Hub Hui that oversees 14 Food Hubs on all islands with a mission to transform the food systems in Hawaii through 100% locally grown food and value added products. Value added products have some imported ingredients such as wheat, olive oil, etc while we develop local substitutions (ie Ulu, Kalo or Kiawe Flour replaces imported wheat flower).
Dean heads up the Hub and the awesome Hub Operational Crew, plus Trida and Jordan from our Value Added; Ranjeed and Dayday from the Cafe and Co-packing facility, Kaleo and crew from Farmers' Markets, plus admin and accounting support.
